Over the past year, many Axos Financial, Inc. (NYSE:AX) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Axos Financial Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Executive Vice President of Finance, Andrew Micheletti, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$940k worth of shares at a price of US$47.52 each. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$39.64. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 4.18k shares worth US$147k. But insiders sold 60.45k shares worth US$2.8m. In total, Axos Financial insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. Does Axos Financial Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own.
