Simmons First National Repeat Insider Selling Not A Positive Indicator
Simmons First National Corporation (NASDAQ:SFNC) shareholders may have reason to be concerned, as several insiders sold their shares over the past year. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Simmons First National
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP, George Makris, for US$269k worth of shares, at about US$17.23 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$22.30, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was only 27% of George Makris's holding.

Insiders At Simmons First National Have Sold Stock Recently
The last three months saw significant insider selling at Simmons First National. Specifically, Independent Director Eugene Hunt ditched US$55k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.
Insider Ownership
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It appears that Simmons First National insiders own 1.7% of the company, worth about US$50m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
