Here's Why We Think Patriot National Bancorp (NASDAQ:PNBK) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Patriot National Bancorp (NASDAQ:PNBK). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

Patriot National Bancorp's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Patriot National Bancorp has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. So it would be better to isolate the growth rate over the last year for our analysis. Patriot National Bancorp boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from US$1.29 to US$1.55, in the last year. There's little doubt shareholders would be happy with that 20% gain.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. Not all of Patriot National Bancorp's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers used in this article might not be the best representation of the underlying business. While we note Patriot National Bancorp achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 16% to US$35m. That's a real positive.

Patriot National Bancorp isn't a huge company, given its market capitalisation of US$36m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Patriot National Bancorp Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Prior to investment, it's always a good idea to check that the management team is paid reasonably. Pay levels around or below the median, can be a sign that shareholder interests are well considered. For companies with market capitalisations under US$200m, like Patriot National Bancorp, the median CEO pay is around US$755k.

The Patriot National Bancorp CEO received US$449k in compensation for the year ending December 2021. That seems pretty reasonable, especially given it's below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. Generally, arguments can be made that reasonable pay levels attest to good decision-making.

Should You Add Patriot National Bancorp To Your Watchlist?

As previously touched on, Patriot National Bancorp is a growing business, which is encouraging. To add to this, the modest CEO compensation should tell investors that the directors have an active interest in delivering the best for shareholders. So based on its merits, the stock deserves further research, if not an addition to your watchlist.
