IF Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ:IROQ) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend on the 15th of October to US$0.17. This takes the annual payment to 1.4% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

IF Bancorp's Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions

While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Before making this announcement, IF Bancorp was easily earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 16.6% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 18% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

IF Bancorp Doesn't Have A Long Payment History

It is great to see that IF Bancorp has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. The first annual payment during the last 8 years was US$0.10 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was US$0.35. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 17% a year over that time. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. We are encouraged to see that IF Bancorp has grown earnings per share at 17% per year over the past five years. A low payout ratio and decent growth suggests that the company is reinvesting well, and it also has plenty of room to increase the dividend over time.

IF Bancorp Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
