The PCL Technologies, Inc. (TWSE:4977) share price has had a bad week, falling 10%. Looking on the brighter side, the stock is actually up over twelve months. But to be blunt its return of 42% fall short of what you could have got from an index fund (around 45%).

While the stock has fallen 10% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over the last twelve months, PCL Technologies actually shrank its EPS by 97%. This was, in part, due to extraordinary items impacting earning in the last twelve months.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We doubt the modest 1.9% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. Unfortunately PCL Technologies' fell 75% over twelve months. So using a snapshot of key business metrics doesn't give us a good picture of why the market is bidding up the stock.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for PCL Technologies the TSR over the last 1 year was 47%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

PCL Technologies' TSR for the year was broadly in line with the market average, at 47%. Most would be happy with a gain, and it helps that the year's return is actually better than the average return over five years, which was 7%. Even if the share price growth slows down from here, there's a good chance that this is business worth watching in the long term. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for PCL Technologies (of which 1 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
