Returns On Capital At WPG Holdings (TWSE:3702) Paint A Concerning Picture
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Having said that, from a first glance at WPG Holdings (TWSE:3702) we aren't jumping out of our chairs at how returns are trending, but let's have a deeper look.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on WPG Holdings is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = NT$13b ÷ (NT$365b - NT$247b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
Therefore, WPG Holdings has an ROCE of 11%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 7.0% generated by the Electronic industry.

What Can We Tell From WPG Holdings' ROCE Trend?
In terms of WPG Holdings' historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 15% over the last five years. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that WPG Holdings has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 68%, which we'd consider pretty high. This effectively means that suppliers (or short-term creditors) are funding a large portion of the business, so just be aware that this can introduce some elements of risk. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
Our Take On WPG Holdings' ROCE
While returns have fallen for WPG Holdings in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 165% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So should these growth trends continue, we'd be optimistic on the stock going forward.
One more thing: We've identified 3 warning signs with WPG Holdings (at least 2 which are a bit concerning) , and understanding them would certainly be useful.
