Recent 10% pullback isn't enough to hurt long-term AzureWave Technologies (TWSE:3694) shareholders, they're still up 225% over 5 years
The AzureWave Technologies, Inc. (TWSE:3694) share price has had a bad week, falling 10%. But that doesn't change the fact that shareholders have received really good returns over the last five years. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 218% in that time. To some, the recent pullback wouldn't be surprising after such a fast rise. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.
Although AzureWave Technologies has shed NT$961m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the last half decade, AzureWave Technologies became profitable. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. We can see that the AzureWave Technologies share price is up 135% in the last three years. Meanwhile, EPS is up 16% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 33% average annual increase in the share price over three years. So one can reasonably conclude the market is more enthusiastic about the stock than it was three years ago.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of AzureWave Technologies, it has a TSR of 225% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
AzureWave Technologies shareholders gained a total return of 27% during the year. But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 27% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For example, we've discovered 1 warning sign for AzureWave Technologies that you should be aware of before investing here.
