Investors Don't See Light At End Of Uniform Industrial Corporation's (TWSE:2482) Tunnel And Push Stock Down 30%
Uniform Industrial Corporation (TWSE:2482) shares have retraced a considerable 30% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 47% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, Uniform Industrial may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.1x, since almost half of all companies in Taiwan have P/E ratios greater than 23x and even P/E's higher than 40x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
For example, consider that Uniform Industrial's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Uniform Industrial's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 39%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Therefore, it's fair to say that earnings growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.
Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 23% shows it's noticeably less attractive on an annualised basis.
In light of this, it's understandable that Uniform Industrial's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Final Word
Uniform Industrial's recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Uniform Industrial maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
