Here's What's Concerning About Aplex Technology's (GTSM:6570) Returns On Capital
If we want to find a potential multi-bagger, often there are underlying trends that can provide clues. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Although, when we looked at Aplex Technology (GTSM:6570), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Aplex Technology:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.048 = NT$42m ÷ (NT$1.0b - NT$173m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).
Thus, Aplex Technology has an ROCE of 4.8%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Tech industry average of 11%.

While the past is not representative of the future, it can be helpful to know how a company has performed historically, which is why we have this chart above. The Trend Of ROCE
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Aplex Technology doesn't inspire confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 16%, but since then they've fallen to 4.8%. And considering revenue has dropped while employing more capital, we'd be cautious. If this were to continue, you might be looking at a company that is trying to reinvest for growth but is actually losing market share since sales haven't increased.
In Conclusion...
We're a bit apprehensive about Aplex Technology because despite more capital being deployed in the business, returns on that capital and sales have both fallen. Investors must expect better things on the horizon though because the stock has risen 6.1% in the last five years. Either way, we aren't huge fans of the current trends and so with that we think you might find better investments elsewhere.
