What Pixon Technologies' (GTSM:5248) Returns On Capital Can Tell Us
What financial metrics can indicate to us that a company is maturing or even in decline? When we see a declining return on capital employed (ROCE) in conjunction with a declining base of capital employed, that's often how a mature business shows signs of aging. Trends like this ultimately mean the business is reducing its investments and also earning less on what it has invested. So after glancing at the trends within Pixon Technologies (GTSM:5248), we weren't too hopeful.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Pixon Technologies is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.076 = NT$36m ÷ (NT$618m - NT$138m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2020).
So, Pixon Technologies has an ROCE of 7.6%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Electronic industry average of 10%.

What Can We Tell From Pixon Technologies' ROCE Trend?
There is reason to be cautious about Pixon Technologies, given the returns are trending downwards. About five years ago, returns on capital were 16%, however they're now substantially lower than that as we saw above. On top of that, it's worth noting that the amount of capital employed within the business has remained relatively steady. Companies that exhibit these attributes tend to not be shrinking, but they can be mature and facing pressure on their margins from competition. If these trends continue, we wouldn't expect Pixon Technologies to turn into a multi-bagger.
The Bottom Line
All in all, the lower returns from the same amount of capital employed aren't exactly signs of a compounding machine. But investors must be expecting an improvement of sorts because over the last five yearsthe stock has delivered a respectable 61% return. In any case, the current underlying trends don't bode well for long term performance so unless they reverse, we'd start looking elsewhere.
