Mildef Crete (GTSM:3213) Has Compensated Shareholders With A Respectable 90% Return On Their Investment
When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But Mildef Crete Inc. (GTSM:3213) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 28% over five years, which is below the market return. Looking at the last year alone, the stock is up 11%.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, Mildef Crete achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 4.3% per year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 5% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. Indeed, it would appear the share price is reacting to the EPS.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Mildef Crete's TSR for the last 5 years was 90%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Mildef Crete shareholders are up 21% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 14% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Mildef Crete (1 doesn't sit too well with us) that you should be aware of.
