Earnings are growing at Formosa Sumco Technology (TWSE:3532) but shareholders still don't like its prospects
The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. But long term Formosa Sumco Technology Corporation (TWSE:3532) shareholders have had a particularly rough ride in the last three year. So they might be feeling emotional about the 65% share price collapse, in that time. And over the last year the share price fell 44%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 30% in the last 90 days.
After losing 10% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
Although the share price is down over three years, Formosa Sumco Technology actually managed to grow EPS by 5.1% per year in that time. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.
Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
Given the healthiness of the dividend payments, we doubt that they've concerned the market. We like that Formosa Sumco Technology has actually grown its revenue over the last three years. If the company can keep growing revenue, there may be an opportunity for investors. You might have to dig deeper to understand the recent share price weakness.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Formosa Sumco Technology's TSR for the last 3 years was -62%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Investors in Formosa Sumco Technology had a tough year, with a total loss of 42% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 31%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.3% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Formosa Sumco Technology better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Formosa Sumco Technology (at least 3 which are a bit concerning) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
