Is MediaTek Inc.'s (TWSE:2454) Recent Stock Performance Influenced By Its Fundamentals In Any Way?
Most readers would already be aware that MediaTek's (TWSE:2454) stock increased significantly by 18% over the past month. Given that stock prices are usually aligned with a company's financial performance in the long-term, we decided to study its financial indicators more closely to see if they had a hand to play in the recent price move. Specifically, we decided to study MediaTek's ROE in this article.
Return on Equity or ROE is a test of how effectively a company is growing its value and managing investors’ money. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?
Return on equity can be calculated by using the formula:
Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity
So, based on the above formula, the ROE for MediaTek is:
26% = NT$102b ÷ NT$391b (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. One way to conceptualize this is that for each NT$1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made NT$0.26 in profit.
Why Is ROE Important For Earnings Growth?
We have already established that ROE serves as an efficient profit-generating gauge for a company's future earnings. We now need to evaluate how much profit the company reinvests or "retains" for future growth which then gives us an idea about the growth potential of the company. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.
MediaTek's Earnings Growth And 26% ROE
To begin with, MediaTek has a pretty high ROE which is interesting. Second, a comparison with the average ROE reported by the industry of 10% also doesn't go unnoticed by us. Under the circumstances, MediaTek's considerable five year net income growth of 25% was to be expected.
We then compared MediaTek's net income growth with the industry and we're pleased to see that the company's growth figure is higher when compared with the industry which has a growth rate of 12% in the same 5-year period.
Earnings growth is an important metric to consider when valuing a stock. It’s important for an investor to know whether the market has priced in the company's expected earnings growth (or decline). This then helps them determine if the stock is placed for a bright or bleak future. Is 2454 fairly valued? This infographic on the company's intrinsic value has everything you need to know.
Is MediaTek Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?
MediaTek has a significant three-year median payout ratio of 97%, meaning the company only retains 3.1% of its income. This implies that the company has been able to achieve high earnings growth despite returning most of its profits to shareholders.
Besides, MediaTek has been paying dividends for at least ten years or more. This shows that the company is committed to sharing profits with its shareholders. Our latest analyst data shows that the future payout ratio of the company over the next three years is expected to be approximately 81%. Accordingly, forecasts suggest that MediaTek's future ROE will be 30% which is again, similar to the current ROE.
Conclusion
In total, it does look like MediaTek has some positive aspects to its business. Specifically, its high ROE which likely led to the growth in earnings. Bear in mind, the company reinvests little to none of its profits, which means that investors aren't necessarily reaping the full benefits of the high rate of return. Having said that, the company's earnings growth is expected to slow down, as forecasted in the current analyst estimates.
