ADATA Technology (GTSM:3260) Has Gifted Shareholders With A Fantastic 136% Total Return On Their Investment
Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. Buying under-rated businesses is one path to excess returns. For example, long term ADATA Technology Co., Ltd. (GTSM:3260) shareholders have enjoyed a 95% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 61% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 15% , including dividends .

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the five years of share price growth, ADATA Technology moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd expect the share price to be up.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, ADATA Technology's TSR for the last 5 years was 136%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
ADATA Technology provided a TSR of 15% over the last twelve months. But that was short of the market average. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 19% a year, over half a decade) look better. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that ADATA Technology is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
