Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, Lin BioScience (GTSM:6696) shareholders have done very well over the last year, with the share price soaring by 124%. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

In light of its strong share price run, we think now is a good time to investigate how risky Lin BioScience's cash burn is. In this report, we will consider the company's annual negative free cash flow, henceforth referring to it as the 'cash burn'. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves.

When Might Lin BioScience Run Out Of Money?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When Lin BioScience last reported its balance sheet in June 2020, it had zero debt and cash worth NT$255m. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through NT$182m. That means it had a cash runway of around 17 months as of June 2020. While that cash runway isn't too concerning, sensible holders would be peering into the distance, and considering what happens if the company runs out of cash. Depicted below, you can see how its cash holdings have changed over time.

How Is Lin BioScience's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?

Because Lin BioScience isn't currently generating revenue, we consider it an early-stage business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. It seems likely that the business is content with its current spending, as the cash burn rate stayed steady over the last twelve months. Admittedly, we're a bit cautious of Lin BioScience due to its lack of significant operating revenues. We prefer most of the stocks on this list of stocks that analysts expect to grow.

How Hard Would It Be For Lin BioScience To Raise More Cash For Growth?

Since its cash burn is increasing (albeit only slightly), Lin BioScience shareholders should still be mindful of the possibility it will require more cash in the future. Companies can raise capital through either debt or equity. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. By comparing a company's annual cash burn to its total market capitalisation, we can estimate roughly how many shares it would have to issue in order to run the company for another year (at the same burn rate).

Lin BioScience has a market capitalisation of NT$10.0b and burnt through NT$182m last year, which is 1.8% of the company's market value. So it could almost certainly just borrow a little to fund another year's growth, or else easily raise the cash by issuing a few shares.

So, Should We Worry About Lin BioScience's Cash Burn?

On this analysis of Lin BioScience's cash burn, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap was reassuring, while its increasing cash burn has us a bit worried.
