Daxin Materials' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions
The dividend yield is a little bit low, but sustainability of the payments is also an important part of evaluating an income stock. The last payment made up 78% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.
Looking forward, could fall by 4.4% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could reach 88%, which is definitely on the higher side.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of NT$2.6 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of NT$4.10. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 4.7% per annum over that time. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. It's not great to see that Daxin Materials' earnings per share has fallen at approximately 4.4% per year over the past five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed.
Our Thoughts On Daxin Materials' Dividend
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Daxin Materials will make a great income stock. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Daxin Materials is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
