Despite an already strong run, Visco Vision Inc. (GTSM:6782) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 25% in the last thirty days. Longer-term shareholders would be thankful for the recovery in the share price since it's now virtually flat for the year after the recent bounce.

Since its price has surged higher, given close to half the companies in Taiwan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 20x, you may consider Visco Vision as a stock to avoid entirely with its 62.6x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

For example, consider that Visco Vision's financial performance has been poor lately as it's earnings have been in decline. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Visco Vision's Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Visco Vision's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 60% decrease to the company's bottom line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 108% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 25% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.

In light of this, it's understandable that Visco Vision's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Presumably shareholders aren't keen to offload something they believe will continue to outmanoeuvre the bourse.

The Final Word

Visco Vision's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Visco Vision maintains its high P/E on the strength of its recent three-year growth being higher than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
