We believe investing is smart because history shows that stock markets go higher in the long term. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. Over the last year the Yankey Engineering Co., Ltd. (GTSM:6691) share price is up 62%, but that's less than the broader market return. We'll need to follow Yankey Engineering for a while to get a better sense of its share price trend, since it hasn't been listed for particularly long.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last year, Yankey Engineering actually saw its earnings per share drop 5.1%.

Given the share price gain, we doubt the market is measuring progress with EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.

For starters, we suspect the share price has been buoyed by the dividend, which was increased during the year. It could be that the company is reaching maturity and dividend investors are buying for the yield, pushing the price up in the process.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Yankey Engineering the TSR over the last year was 72%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We're happy to report that Yankey Engineering are up 72% over the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately this falls short of the market return of around 95%. That's a lot better than the more recent three month gain of 7.0%, implying that share price has plateaued recently, for now. It's not uncommon to see a company's share price between updates to shareholders. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Yankey Engineering is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is potentially serious...
