Here's Why We Think Sembcorp Industries (SGX:U96) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Unfortunately, these high risk investments often have little probability of ever paying off, and many investors pay a price to learn their lesson. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.
In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like Sembcorp Industries (SGX:U96), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

Sembcorp Industries' Improving Profits
In the last three years Sembcorp Industries' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. To the delight of shareholders, Sembcorp Industries' EPS soared from S$0.40 to S$0.57, over the last year. That's a commendable gain of 45%.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Unfortunately, Sembcorp Industries' revenue dropped 10% last year, but the silver lining is that EBIT margins improved from 11% to 17%. That's not a good look.

Are Sembcorp Industries Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Sembcorp Industries has a market capitalisation of S$9.3b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Given insiders own a significant chunk of shares, currently valued at S$97m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That's certainly enough to let shareholders know that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
