Hutchison Port Holdings Trust's (SGX:NS8U three-year decrease in earnings delivers investors with a 9.6% loss
While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Hutchison Port Holdings Trust (SGX:NS8U) share price up 19% in a single quarter. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. After all, the share price is down 32% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.
Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the three years that the share price fell, Hutchison Port Holdings Trust's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 40% each year. In comparison the 12% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have previously priced some of the drop in.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Hutchison Port Holdings Trust, it has a TSR of -9.6% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
Hutchison Port Holdings Trust shareholders are up 17% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 7% per year over five year. This could indicate that the company is winning over new investors, as it pursues its strategy. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Hutchison Port Holdings Trust (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
