OKH Global Ltd. (SGX:S3N) Surges 27% Yet Its Low P/E Is No Reason For Excitement

OKH Global Ltd. (SGX:S3N) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 27% share price jump in the last month. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 36% over that time.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, OKH Global may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 4.4x, since almost half of all companies in Singapore have P/E ratios greater than 12x and even P/E's higher than 21x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for OKH Global as its earnings have been rising very briskly. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

OKH Global's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 44% last year. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 8.4% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this information, we are not surprised that OKH Global is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

What We Can Learn From OKH Global's P/E?

Shares in OKH Global are going to need a lot more upward momentum to get the company's P/E out of its slump. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of OKH Global revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term are contributing to its low P/E, given the market is set to grow. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
