Hiap Seng Industries Limited's (SGX:1L2) 33% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk

The Hiap Seng Industries Limited (SGX:1L2) share price has softened a substantial 33% over the previous 30 days, handing back much of the gains the stock has made lately. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 100%, which is great even in a bull market.

Although its price has dipped substantially, when almost half of the companies in Singapore's Construction industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.4x, you may still consider Hiap Seng Industries as a stock probably not worth researching with its 1.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Has Hiap Seng Industries Performed Recently?

The revenue growth achieved at Hiap Seng Industries over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this respectable revenue growth will be enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Hiap Seng Industries would need to produce impressive growth in excess of the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 17% last year. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 8.6% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

With this information, we find it concerning that Hiap Seng Industries is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What Does Hiap Seng Industries' P/S Mean For Investors?

Despite the recent share price weakness, Hiap Seng Industries' P/S remains higher than most other companies in the industry. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

Our examination of Hiap Seng Industries revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
