Net Insight AB (publ) (STO:NETI B) Stock's 39% Dive Might Signal An Opportunity But It Requires Some Scrutiny

To the annoyance of some shareholders, Net Insight AB (publ) (STO:NETI B) shares are down a considerable 39% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 45% in that time.

Although its price has dipped substantially, given about half the companies in Sweden have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 22x, you may still consider Net Insight as an attractive investment with its 13.9x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Net Insight has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Net Insight's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 21% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 233% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 26% per year as estimated by the two analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 20% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Net Insight's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

The softening of Net Insight's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Net Insight's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. At least price risks look to be very low, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
