David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. How Strong Is Diös Fastigheter's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Diös Fastigheter had liabilities of kr3.40b due within a year, and liabilities of kr16.4b falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had kr191.0m in cash and kr302.0m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by kr19.3b.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the kr10.9b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. To be frank both Diös Fastigheter's interest cover and its track record of staying on top of its total liabilities make us rather uncomfortable with its debt levels. But at least it's pretty decent at converting EBIT to free cash flow; that's encouraging. Overall, it seems to us that Diös Fastigheter's balance sheet is really quite a risk to the business. So we're almost as wary of this stock as a hungry kitten is about falling into its owner's fish pond: once bitten, twice shy, as they say.
