There's no doubt that money can be made by owning shares of unprofitable businesses. Indeed, Adverty (NGM:ADVT) stock is up 179% in the last year, providing strong gains for shareholders. But the harsh reality is that very many loss making companies burn through all their cash and go bankrupt.

Does Adverty Have A Long Cash Runway?
A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. Adverty has such a small amount of debt that we'll set it aside, and focus on the kr17m in cash it held at December 2020. In the last year, its cash burn was kr22m. So it had a cash runway of approximately 10 months from December 2020. That's quite a short cash runway, indicating the company must either reduce its annual cash burn or replenish its cash. How Is Adverty's Cash Burn Changing Over Time?
In our view, Adverty doesn't yet produce significant amounts of operating revenue, since it reported just kr1.6m in the last twelve months. As a result, we think it's a bit early to focus on the revenue growth, so we'll limit ourselves to looking at how the cash burn is changing over time. Over the last year its cash burn actually increased by 32%, which suggests that management are increasing investment in future growth, but not too quickly. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but investors should be mindful of the fact that will shorten the cash runway. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. Can Adverty Raise More Cash Easily?
Since its cash burn is moving in the wrong direction, Adverty shareholders may wish to think ahead to when the company may need to raise more cash. How Risky Is Adverty's Cash Burn Situation?
On this analysis of Adverty's cash burn, we think its cash burn relative to its market cap was reassuring, while its cash runway has us a bit worried.
