If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Evolution (STO:EVO) Before It's Too Late

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Evolution (STO:EVO). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Evolution's Improving Profits

In the last three years Evolution's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, Evolution's EPS shot from €1.16 to €2.19, over the last year. Year on year growth of 88% is certainly a sight to behold. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Evolution shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 50% to 58%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are Evolution Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a kr301b company like Evolution. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth €21b. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Evolution, with market caps over €6.8b, is about €2.0m.

Evolution offered total compensation worth €1.8m to its CEO in the year to . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Does Evolution Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Evolution's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The strong EPS improvement suggests the businesses is humming along. Evolution certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it's probably well worth further consideration.
