Betsson AB (publ)'s (STO:BETS B) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 12.5x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Sweden, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 23x and even P/E's above 37x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Our free stock report includes 1 warning sign investors should be aware of before investing in Betsson. Read for free now.

Betsson could be doing better as it's been growing earnings less than most other companies lately. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping earnings don't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Betsson would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 3.8% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see EPS up by 80% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 13% each year as estimated by the three analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 20% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Betsson's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Betsson's P/E?

While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Betsson's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
