Saab AB (publ) (STO:SAAB B) Stocks Shoot Up 26% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable
Despite an already strong run, Saab AB (publ) (STO:SAAB B) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 37% in the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, Saab's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 33.7x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Sweden, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 21x and even P/E's below 13x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
Recent times have been advantageous for Saab as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Saab would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 53% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 215% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 23% per annum as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 19% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Saab's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Saab's P/E
The strong share price surge has got Saab's P/E rushing to great heights as well. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Saab maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
