The five-year decline in earnings for Cognor Holding WSE:COG) isn't encouraging, but shareholders are still up 459% over that period

Cognor Holding S.A. (WSE:COG) shareholders might understandably be very concerned that the share price has dropped 32% in the last quarter. But that doesn't undermine the fantastic longer term performance (measured over five years). In fact, during that period, the share price climbed 355%. Impressive! So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. Of course what matters most is whether the business can improve itself sustainably, thus justifying a higher price.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 15%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Cognor Holding actually saw its EPS drop 10.0% per year.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

In contrast revenue growth of 12% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Cognor Holding is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Cognor Holding's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Cognor Holding's TSR of 459% over the last 5 years is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 6.2% in the last year, Cognor Holding shareholders lost 34%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 41%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Cognor Holding better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 2 warning signs for Cognor Holding you should be aware of, and 1 of them is a bit unpleasant.
