Cognor Holding (WSE:COG) Has Gifted Shareholders With A Fantastic 142% Total Return On Their Investment
Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. And while active stock picking involves risks (and requires diversification) it can also provide excess returns. For example, long term Cognor Holding S.A. (WSE:COG) shareholders have enjoyed a 93% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market decline of around 3.1% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 20% in the last year.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During the last half decade, Cognor Holding became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd expect the share price to be up.
You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between Cognor Holding's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Cognor Holding's TSR of 142% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Cognor Holding has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 20% in the last twelve months. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 19%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Cognor Holding better, we need to consider many other factors.
