If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Comeco (WSE:CMC) Before It's Too Late

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Comeco (WSE:CMC). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Comeco's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Comeco has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Comeco boosted its trailing twelve month EPS from zł0.014 to zł0.016, in the last year. I doubt many would complain about that 16% gain.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Comeco's EBIT margins are flat but, of some concern, its revenue is actually down. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

Comeco isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of zł4.1m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Comeco Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So we're pleased to report that Comeco insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 71% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. Valued at only zł4.1m Comeco is really small for a listed company. So despite a large proportional holding, insiders only have zł2.9m worth of stock. That might not be a huge sum but it should be enough to keep insiders motivated!

Is Comeco Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One positive for Comeco is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. The combination sparks joy for me, so I'd consider keeping the company on a watchlist. Still, you should learn about the 4 warning signs we've spotted with Comeco (including 2 which are significant) .

Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
