In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But the main game is to find enough winners to more than offset the losers At this point some shareholders may be questioning their investment in Alumetal S.A. (WSE:AML), since the last five years saw the share price fall 34%. There was little comfort for shareholders in the last week as the price declined a further 3.9%.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the five years over which the share price declined, Alumetal's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 2.3% each year. This reduction in EPS is less than the 8.1% annual reduction in the share price. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, in the past.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered Alumetal's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Alumetal's TSR, which was a 15% drop over the last 5 years, was not as bad as the share price return.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Alumetal shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 0.5% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 2.9% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future.
