Some Confidence Is Lacking In Igoria Trade S.A. (WSE:IGT) As Shares Slide 25%
The Igoria Trade S.A. (WSE:IGT) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 25%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 44% in that time.
Although its price has dipped substantially, there still wouldn't be many who think Igoria Trade's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.8x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Poland is similar at about 12x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
For example, consider that Igoria Trade's financial performance has been poor lately as its earnings have been in decline. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Igoria Trade's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 56%. This has erased any of its gains during the last three years, with practically no change in EPS being achieved in total. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 15% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's curious that Igoria Trade's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.
The Key Takeaway
With its share price falling into a hole, the P/E for Igoria Trade looks quite average now. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that Igoria Trade currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider market forecast. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as this earnings performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
