It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Meridian Energy (NZSE:MEL). I always like to check up on CEO compensation, because I think that reasonable pay levels, around or below the median, can be a sign that shareholder interests are well considered. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Meridian Energy with market caps between NZ$5.9b and NZ$18b is about NZ$2.6m.
The Meridian Energy CEO received NZ$2.3m in compensation for the year ending . That comes in below the average for similar sized companies, and seems pretty reasonable to me. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
Should You Add Meridian Energy To Your Watchlist?
Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Meridian Energy's strong EPS growth. The fast growth bodes well while the very reasonable CEO pay assists builds some confidence in the board. So I'd venture it may well deserve a spot on your watchlist, or even a little further research.
