The 14% return this week takes MPC Container Ships' (OB:MPCC) shareholders five-year gains to 818%
It hasn't been the best quarter for MPC Container Ships ASA (OB:MPCC) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 19% in that time. But the silver lining is the stock is up over five years. However we are not very impressed because the share price is only up 54%, less than the market return of 67%. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for five years, so spare a thought for those caught in the 43% decline over the last three years: that's a long time to wait for profits.
The past week has proven to be lucrative for MPC Container Ships investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's five-year performance.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the last half decade, MPC Container Ships became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. In fact, the MPC Container Ships stock price is 43% lower in the last three years. In the same period, EPS is up 9.5% per year. It would appear there's a real mismatch between the increasing EPS and the share price, which has declined -17% a year for three years.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, MPC Container Ships' TSR for the last 5 years was 818%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that MPC Container Ships shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 44% over the last year. That's including the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 56% per year, is even more impressive. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
