Many Would Be Envious Of Atea's (OB:ATEA) Excellent Returns On Capital
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Ergo, when we looked at the ROCE trends at Atea (OB:ATEA), we liked what we saw.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Atea is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.22 = kr1.3b ÷ (kr17b - kr11b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
So, Atea has an ROCE of 22%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 17% earned by companies in a similar industry.

So How Is Atea's ROCE Trending?
It's hard not to be impressed by Atea's returns on capital. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 22% and the business has deployed 50% more capital into its operations. With returns that high, it's great that the business can continually reinvest its money at such appealing rates of return. If Atea can keep this up, we'd be very optimistic about its future.
On a side note, Atea's current liabilities are still rather high at 67% of total assets. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
The Key Takeaway
In short, we'd argue Atea has the makings of a multi-bagger since its been able to compound its capital at very profitable rates of return. And the stock has followed suit returning a meaningful 57% to shareholders over the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
