Golden Energy Offshore Services' (OB:GEOS) Attractive Earnings Are Not All Good News For Shareholders
Strong earnings weren't enough to please Golden Energy Offshore Services AS' (OB:GEOS) shareholders over the last week. We did some analysis and believe that they might be concerned about some weak underlying factors.

A Closer Look At Golden Energy Offshore Services' Earnings
One key financial ratio used to measure how well a company converts its profit to free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
For the year to June 2023, Golden Energy Offshore Services had an accrual ratio of 0.81. As a general rule, that bodes poorly for future profitability. To wit, the company did not generate one whit of free cashflow in that time. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of kr137m, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of kr24.8m. It's worth noting that Golden Energy Offshore Services generated positive FCF of kr715k a year ago, so at least they've done it in the past. However, that's not the end of the story. We must also consider the impact of unusual items on statutory profit (and thus the accrual ratio), as well as note the ramifications of the company issuing new shares. One positive for Golden Energy Offshore Services shareholders is that it's accrual ratio was significantly better last year, providing reason to believe that it may return to stronger cash conversion in the future. As a result, some shareholders may be looking for stronger cash conversion in the current year.

In order to understand the potential for per share returns, it is essential to consider how much a company is diluting shareholders. In fact, Golden Energy Offshore Services increased the number of shares on issue by 126% over the last twelve months by issuing new shares. As a result, its net income is now split between a greater number of shares. Per share metrics like EPS help us understand how much actual shareholders are benefitting from the company's profits, while the net income level gives us a better view of the company's absolute size. How Is Dilution Impacting Golden Energy Offshore Services' Earnings Per Share (EPS)?
Three years ago, Golden Energy Offshore Services lost money. And even focusing only on the last twelve months, we don't have a meaningful growth rate because it made a loss a year ago, too. But mathematics aside, it is always good to see when a formerly unprofitable business come good (though we accept profit would have been higher if dilution had not been required). And so, you can see quite clearly that dilution is having a rather significant impact on shareholders.
If Golden Energy Offshore Services' EPS can grow over time then that drastically improves the chances of the share price moving in the same direction. However, if its profit increases while its earnings per share stay flat (or even fall) then shareholders might not see much benefit. For that reason, you could say that EPS is more important that net income in the long run, assuming the goal is to assess whether a company's share price might grow.
The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Given the accrual ratio, it's not overly surprising that Golden Energy Offshore Services' profit was boosted by unusual items worth kr155m in the last twelve months. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. We can see that Golden Energy Offshore Services' positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to June 2023. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On Golden Energy Offshore Services' Profit Performance
Golden Energy Offshore Services didn't back up its earnings with free cashflow, but this isn't too surprising given profits were inflated by unusual items. The dilution means the results are weaker when viewed from a per-share perspective. On reflection, the above-mentioned factors give us the strong impression that Golden Energy Offshore Services'underlying earnings power is not as good as it might seem, based on the statutory profit numbers.
