Earnings Update: Here's Why Analysts Just Lifted Their ASM International NV (AMS:ASM) Price Target To €568
ASM International NV (AMS:ASM) last week reported its latest annual results, which makes it a good time for investors to dive in and see if the business is performing in line with expectations. Revenues of €2.6b were in line with forecasts, although statutory earnings per share (EPS) came in below expectations at €15.18, missing estimates by 4.2%. This is an important time for investors, as they can track a company's performance in its report, look at what experts are forecasting for next year, and see if there has been any change to expectations for the business. So we gathered the latest post-earnings forecasts to see what estimates suggest is in store for next year.
Check out our latest analysis for ASM International
Taking into account the latest results, the consensus forecast from ASM International's 20 analysts is for revenues of €2.80b in 2024. This reflects a satisfactory 6.1% improvement in revenue compared to the last 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are expected to plunge 20% to €12.21 in the same period. In the lead-up to this report, the analysts had been modelling revenues of €2.88b and earnings per share (EPS) of €13.05 in 2024. It's pretty clear that pessimism has reared its head after the latest results, leading to a weaker revenue outlook and a small dip in earnings per share estimates.
What's most unexpected is that the consensus price target rose 8.4% to €568, strongly implying the downgrade to forecasts is not expected to be more than a temporary blip. That's not the only conclusion we can draw from this data however, as some investors also like to consider the spread in estimates when evaluating analyst price targets. There are some variant perceptions on ASM International, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at €740 and the most bearish at €410 per share. Analysts definitely have varying views on the business, but the spread of estimates is not wide enough in our view to suggest that extreme outcomes could await ASM International shareholders.
Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. We would highlight that ASM International's revenue growth is expected to slow, with the forecast 6.1% annualised growth rate until the end of 2024 being well below the historical 22% p.a. growth over the last five years. Compare this against other companies (with analyst forecasts) in the industry, which are in aggregate expected to see revenue growth of 11% annually. Factoring in the forecast slowdown in growth, it seems obvious that ASM International is also expected to grow slower than other industry participants.
The Bottom Line
The most important thing to take away is that the analysts downgraded their earnings per share estimates, showing that there has been a clear decline in sentiment following these results. On the negative side, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and forecasts imply they will perform worse than the wider industry. We note an upgrade to the price target, suggesting that the analysts believes the intrinsic value of the business is likely to improve over time.
Following on from that line of thought, we think that the long-term prospects of the business are much more relevant than next year's earnings. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for ASM International going out to 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here..
