The analysts covering OCI N.V. (AMS:OCI) delivered a dose of negativity to shareholders today, by making a substantial revision to their statutory forecasts for this year. This report focused on revenue estimates, and it looks as though the consensus view of the business has become substantially more conservative.

Following the latest downgrade, the eleven analysts covering OCI provided consensus estimates of US$4.9b revenue in 2023, which would reflect a stressful 44% decline on its sales over the past 12 months. Prior to the latest estimates, the analysts were forecasting revenues of US$6.6b in 2023. The consensus view seems to have become more pessimistic on OCI, noting the pretty serious reduction to revenue estimates in this update.

We'd point out that there was no major changes to their price target of US$37.92, suggesting the latest estimates were not enough to shift their view on the value of the business. The consensus price target is just an average of individual analyst targets, so - it could be handy to see how wide the range of underlying estimates is. There are some variant perceptions on OCI, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at US$45.63 and the most bearish at US$25.13 per share. Analysts definitely have varying views on the business, but the spread of estimates is not wide enough in our view to suggest that extreme outcomes could await OCI shareholders.

Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. We would highlight that sales are expected to reverse, with a forecast 54% annualised revenue decline to the end of 2023. That is a notable change from historical growth of 29% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 3.9% annually for the foreseeable future. It's pretty clear that OCI's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their revenue estimates for this year. They're also anticipating slower revenue growth than the wider market. Often, one downgrade can set off a daisy-chain of cuts, especially if an industry is in decline. So we wouldn't be surprised if the market became a lot more cautious on OCI after today.

After a downgrade like this, it's pretty clear that previous forecasts were too optimistic.
