Here's Why We Think Signify (AMS:LIGHT) Is Well Worth Watching

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Signify (AMS:LIGHT). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Signify's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Signify's EPS has grown 18% each year, compound, over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Signify maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 5.5% to €6.9b. That's a real positive.

Are Signify Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. However, insiders are sometimes wrong, and we don't know the exact thinking behind their acquisitions.

First things first; I didn't see insiders sell Signify shares in the last year. Even better, though, is that the CFO & Member of Board of Management, Francisco Van Engelen Sousa, bought a whopping €468k worth of shares, paying about €46.78 per share, on average. To me that means at least one insider thinks that the company is doing well - and they are backing that view with cash.

Should You Add Signify To Your Watchlist?

Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Signify's strong EPS growth. The growth rate whets my appetite for research, and the insider buying only increases my interest in the stock. To put it succinctly; Signify is a strong candidate for your watchlist. We should say that we've discovered 2 warning signs for Signify that you should be aware of before investing here.
