Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like P.A. Resources Berhad (KLSE:PA). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

P.A. Resources Berhad's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, P.A. Resources Berhad has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, P.A. Resources Berhad's EPS shot from RM0.0019 to RM0.0055, over the last year. Year on year growth of 183% is certainly a sight to behold. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that P.A. Resources Berhad is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 2.6 percentage points to 5.9%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

P.A. Resources Berhad isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of RM376m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are P.A. Resources Berhad Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So we're pleased to report that P.A. Resources Berhad insiders own a meaningful share of the business. Actually, with 41% of the company to their names, insiders are profoundly invested in the business. I'm reassured by this kind of alignment, as it suggests the business will be run for the benefit of shareholders. With that sort of holding, insiders have about RM155m riding on the stock, at current prices. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Does P.A. Resources Berhad Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

P.A. Resources Berhad's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So to my mind P.A. Resources Berhad is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. You still need to take note of risks, for example - P.A. Resources Berhad has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.

Although P.A. Resources Berhad certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
