Sunway Berhad's (KLSE:SUNWAY) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Sunway Berhad (KLSE:SUNWAY) has announced that the dividend on 17th of April will be increased to MYR0.04, which will be 14% higher than last year's payment of MYR0.035 which covered the same period. Despite this raise, the dividend yield of 1.4% is only a modest boost to shareholder returns.

Sunway Berhad's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. However, prior to this announcement, Sunway Berhad's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 17.3%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 29% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from MYR0.0429 total annually to MYR0.06. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.4% a year over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
Sunway Berhad May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. However, Sunway Berhad has only grown its earnings per share at 4.2% per annum over the past five years. While EPS growth is quite low, Sunway Berhad has the option to increase the payout ratio to return more cash to shareholders.
An additional note is that the company has been raising capital by issuing stock equal to 12% of shares outstanding in the last 12 months. Regularly doing this can be detrimental - it's hard to grow dividends per share when new shares are regularly being created.
In Summary
In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
