Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. Buying under-rated businesses is one path to excess returns. To wit, the Monex. de share price has climbed 19% in five years, easily topping the market return of 5.8% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 4.5% in the last year , including dividends .

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last half decade, Monex. de became profitable. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so we would expect to see an increasing share price.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Monex. de, it has a TSR of 33% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Monex. de has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 4.5% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 6% a year, is even better. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
