While Innometry Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:302430) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 11% in the last quarter. But over the last year the share price action has been satisfactory. After all, the stock has performed better than the market's return of (35%) over the last year, and is up 38%.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year, Innometry actually saw its earnings per share drop 2.7%.

Sometimes companies will sacrifice EPS in the short term for longer term gains; and in that case we may be able to find other positives. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

However the year on year revenue growth of 26% would help. We do see some companies suppress earnings in order to accelerate revenue growth.

Innometry boasts a total shareholder return of 40% for the last year (that includes the dividends) . Unfortunately the share price is down 11% over the last quarter. It may simply be that the share price got ahead of itself, although there may have been fundamental developments that are weighing on it. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
