Four Days Left To Buy Uniquest Corporation (KRX:077500) Before The Ex-Dividend Date
Regular readers will know that we love our dividends at Simply Wall St, which is why it's exciting to see Uniquest Corporation (KRX:077500) is about to trade ex-dividend in the next four days. The ex-dividend date is usually set to be one business day before the record date which is the cut-off date on which you must be present on the company's books as a shareholder in order to receive the dividend. The ex-dividend date is of consequence because whenever a stock is bought or sold, the trade takes at least two business day to settle. Accordingly, Uniquest investors that purchase the stock on or after the 27th of December will not receive the dividend, which will be paid on the 28th of April.
The company's next dividend payment will be ₩200.00 per share, and in the last 12 months, the company paid a total of ₩200 per share. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Uniquest stock has a trailing yield of around 4.3% on the current share price of ₩4660.00. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

If a company pays out more in dividends than it earned, then the dividend might become unsustainable - hardly an ideal situation. Uniquest paid out a comfortable 40% of its profit last year. Yet cash flows are even more important than profits for assessing a dividend, so we need to see if the company generated enough cash to pay its distribution. It paid out 22% of its free cash flow as dividends last year, which is conservatively low.
It's encouraging to see that the dividend is covered by both profit and cash flow. This generally suggests the dividend is sustainable, as long as earnings don't drop precipitously.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?
Businesses with shrinking earnings are tricky from a dividend perspective. If earnings decline and the company is forced to cut its dividend, investors could watch the value of their investment go up in smoke. With that in mind, we're discomforted by Uniquest's 5.4% per annum decline in earnings in the past five years. Such a sharp decline casts doubt on the future sustainability of the dividend.
Another key way to measure a company's dividend prospects is by measuring its historical rate of dividend growth. Uniquest has delivered 11% dividend growth per year on average over the past five years.
To Sum It Up
Should investors buy Uniquest for the upcoming dividend? Earnings per share are down meaningfully, although at least the company is paying out a low and conservative percentage of both its earnings and cash flow. It's definitely not great to see earnings falling, but at least there may be some buffer before the dividend needs to be cut. While it does have some good things going for it, we're a bit ambivalent and it would take more to convince us of Uniquest's dividend merits.
With that in mind, a critical part of thorough stock research is being aware of any risks that stock currently faces. To help with this, we've discovered 4 warning signs for Uniquest that you should be aware of before investing in their shares.
