Ram Technology Co., Ltd (KOSDAQ:171010) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 31% gain in the last month alone. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 8.9% isn't as impressive.

Although its price has surged higher, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Ram Technology's P/S ratio of 1.8x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Semiconductor industry in Korea is also close to 1.4x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does Ram Technology's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

For instance, Ram Technology's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/S is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader industry in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Some Revenue Growth Forecasted For Ram Technology?

Ram Technology's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 11%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with revenue growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 41% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this in mind, we find it intriguing that Ram Technology's P/S is comparable to that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

What Does Ram Technology's P/S Mean For Investors?

Ram Technology's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Ram Technology revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't resulting in a lower P/S as per our expectations, given they look worse than current industry outlook. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Ram Technology (at least 3 which don't sit too well with us), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
