Positive Sentiment Still Eludes STI Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:039440) Following 27% Share Price Slump
To the annoyance of some shareholders, STI Co., Ltd. (KOSDAQ:039440) shares are down a considerable 27% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 55% loss during that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, it's still not a stretch to say that STI's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 11.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in Korea, where the median P/E ratio is around 11x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.
STI hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/E from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like STI's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 12%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 185% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would probably welcome the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 42% each year during the coming three years according to the three analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 15% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's curious that STI's P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Bottom Line On STI's P/E
With its share price falling into a hole, the P/E for STI looks quite average now. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of STI's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
