Fine Semitech Corp. (KOSDAQ:036810) shares have had a horrible month, losing 26% after a relatively good period beforehand. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.

In spite of the heavy fall in price, you could still be forgiven for thinking Fine Semitech is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 2.8x, considering almost half the companies in Korea's Semiconductor industry have P/S ratios below 1.7x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

What Does Fine Semitech's Recent Performance Look Like?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Fine Semitech over the last year, which is not ideal at all. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Fine Semitech's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Fine Semitech's Revenue Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Fine Semitech's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 9.0%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 15% overall rise in revenue. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 89% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this in mind, we find it worrying that Fine Semitech's P/S exceeds that of its industry peers. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From Fine Semitech's P/S?

Despite the recent share price weakness, Fine Semitech's P/S remains higher than most other companies in the industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

The fact that Fine Semitech currently trades on a higher P/S relative to the industry is an oddity, since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as this revenue performance isn't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Fine Semitech (of which 2 shouldn't be ignored!) you should know about.
