Ildong Holdings (KRX:000230) shareholders are up 18% this past week, but still in the red over the last three years
Ildong Holdings Co., Ltd. (KRX:000230) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 19% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been stomach churning. In that time the share price has melted like a snowball in the desert, down 79%. So we're relieved for long term holders to see a bit of uplift. Only time will tell if the company can sustain the turnaround.
While the stock has risen 18% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Ildong Holdings became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.
With a rather small yield of just 1.4% we doubt that the stock's share price is based on its dividend. With revenue flat over three years, it seems unlikely that the share price is reflecting the top line. There doesn't seem to be any clear correlation between the fundamental business metrics and the share price. That could mean that the stock was previously overrated, or it could spell opportunity now.

A Different Perspective
We regret to report that Ildong Holdings shareholders are down 17% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 4.0%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 3% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Ildong Holdings (1 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
