Pulling back 6.4% this week, Medy-Tox's KOSDAQ:086900) three-year decline in earnings may be coming into investors focus
Medy-Tox Inc. (KOSDAQ:086900) shareholders have seen the share price descend 11% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been respectable. In that time the stock gained 39%, besting the market return of 35%.
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 6.4%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.
While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the three years of share price growth, Medy-Tox actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop 23% per year.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
The modest 0.7% dividend yield is unlikely to be propping up the share price. It could be that the revenue growth of 9.3% per year is viewed as evidence that Medy-Tox is growing. If the company is being managed for the long term good, today's shareholders might be right to hold on.
The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
We know that Medy-Tox has improved its bottom line lately, but what does the future have in store? You can see what analysts are predicting for Medy-Tox in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.
What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Medy-Tox, it has a TSR of 42% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Medy-Tox shareholders are down 15% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 15%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 0.9% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
